Janken

Janken is the Japanese word for the common game known in the US as Rock-Paper-Scissors. Roughly translated, it means hand game but also implies fist, strike, and gambling.

Dimensions: 6 ft x 6 ft x 6 ft
Materials: rock, paper, scissors, webcam, video projector, computer, custom software

Showings:

  • COLLISIONseven, 2nd chance, MIT Stata Center Gallery, Cambridge, MA, Apr 23 to May 08, 2005

  • COLLISIONseven, chance, Art Interactive Gallery, Cambridge, MA, Apr 02 to Apr 10, 2005

Janken presents two aspects: when interacted with, it engages the viewer with a very familiar hand gesture game. Without human interaction, it reverts to the performance of a random and unfamiliar sign language.
